Cross-Cutting
A transformation of a former tabakschuur into a house and studio for two filmmakers and their family.

Cross cutting is an editing technique in film, to establish actions occurring at the same time, and often in the same place. The suggested simultaneity of actions is what happens when living and work are interwoven.

To accommodate for this flow of actions, the large barn will be cleared on the inside from unnecessary walls and floors, in order to create one continuous interior space. Functions like a bedroom, bathroom and studio that require shielding or privacy are placed in separate wooden volumes. Instead of just walls and doors, the void space separates these volumes, maximizing the spatial experience.

To accommodate for this flow of actions, the large barn will be cleared on the inside from unnecessary walls and floors, in order to create one continuous interior space. Functions like a bedroom, bathroom and studio that require shielding or privacy are placed in separate wooden volumes. Instead of just walls and doors, the void space separates these volumes, maximising the spatial experience. This allows for spontaneity and unplanned activities
to take place where they occur, like making a sketch, playing a song on a guitar or just daydreaming.
The interior atmosphere of the house results from the combination of new volumes in wood and light colors, carefully placed skylights and large facade openings that accentuate the elegant roughness of steel and brick from the former facility. Three distinctive zones are both separated and intertwined. The outer two are private zones, whereas the central one provides the working space. This allows for future changes, such as renting out the front part of the house, without compromising the functionality of the whole.
