Social housing redefined
Lifting the low rise housing block. For these building blocks, with almost 500 units of social housing, decay was looming. Tenant mutation numbers were rising and the social cohesion was falling.
Units
484
Location
Amsterdam Bijlmermeer, NL
Period
2008-2010
Designing and renovating with a social housing budget, maintaining the rents low as they are and the tennants in their home even during renovation works.
Sliding windows were replaced with large aluminium tilting opening windows. Kitchens and bathrooms were redone with the option for an upgrade. 36 entrances stepped out of their niches The 36 somewhat obscure entrances were replaced with a seemingly granite portal of polished concrete. With this we eliminated all the obscuring dirt collecting niches.
